Choosing a tree service can be a difficult process. With so many different things to consider, how do you choose the tree service that is best for you?
We have put together a list of things that you need to know when selecting a tree service.
  1. Does this tree service have a Certified Arborist on staff? This is by far the most important question to ask. Only trust an ISA Certified Arborist to care for your trees. Ask for their credentials, or verify their credentials at www.isa-arbor.com.
  2. Does the tree service have liability insurance?     Average coverage for general liability insurance is one million dollars. This is insurance to take care of your property should anything happen while tree services are being performed.
  3. Does the tree service carry workers compensation for its employees?                           Tree services need to carry workers compensation coverage for all of their employees. This covers the employee, should anything happen to them while on your property, providing tree services. If the company does not carry this coverage, and an employee was hurt on your property, you could be sued by the injured party.
We feel that these 3 things are the most important criteria that need to be met, however there are many other things to consider when it comes to finding a tree service that will meet your needs.

What needs to be done?
  • If you have large trees that need to be removed, is the company equipped to handle the task? Do they have the means to safely access the trees, cut them down, and haul them away?
  • If your goal is to save your trees, and have them properly maintained, look for indications that the tree service does this often, and knows how to do it right.
  • If you have a sick tree that needs special attention, are you contacting an Arborist who is knowledgeable in tree biology? Is the tree service that you are looking at, a tree service that specializes in removals, or diagnostics and corrections?

What to look for from a tree service?
  • Is the Arborist just there for sales, or are they onsite while the work is being performed as well? It is important that the Arborist can convey your needs to the crew clearly while work is being performed.
  • Did the crew have a safety briefing before any work began? All tree service crews should have a safety briefing before every job. The briefing covers information like any potential hazards to be cautious of, and any specifics concerning your property.
  • Are all of the workers on your property wearing safety equipment? All workers should be wearing a hard hat, and safety glasses at the very least, at all times while working on your property.

Something else to consider when hiring a tree service is; simply having big equipment, does not make one tree service better than another. Lots of tree services have fleets of big trucks, and cranes, even those who lack knowledge and skills.
